My name is Crystal and I look forward to joining you as we embark on this journey of good health and fitness. I started writing this blog for several reasons. First, I turned 40 in April 2012. Around my birthday every year, I reflect on how my life has changed since the previous birthday. Additionally, on milestone birthdays (30, 35, etc.), I think about my last two or three milestone birthdays and how my life has changed since those times. Turning 40 is a huge deal for me.
Additionally, the perfect storm of events caused me to start taking my health seriously. Before my husband and I joined Planet Fitness in early April 2012, I lived a sedentary life. I practice law during the day (Yay Rutgers Law School!). So, I am either sitting in my office reading and typing or sitting in court waiting for my cases to be heard. During the evening, I would usually sit and crochet something to sell in my online boutique, Interwoven Creations by Crystal. Too much sitting. I was taking medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol. The scale that my husband and I own not only tells the weight, but also indicates the percentage of body fat. One day in early April 2012, the scale hurt my feelings. Twice. Hence, my new membership to Planet Fitness. I looked in the mirror one day while getting dressed and realized that I needed to make a change in my lifestyle. Cellulite is no bueno. I am not working out to get skinny. I am working out to get FIT.
In addition to the health benefits, I see fitness from a theological perspective. I am guided by 1 Corinthians 3:16, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (NKJV). Because my body is the temple of God, I must respect and honor God’s dwelling place. Healthy eating and regular exercise show honor and respect for God’s dwelling place.
In addition to practicing law, I am a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I earned my Master of Divinity degree from Drew University. In seminary, one major issue that I noticed about my ministerial colleagues and myself was that many of us rarely made time to take care of ourselves. It doesn’t help that there’s always some fried chicken at a church dinner. But, I digress. Consequently, our health suffers. Writing this blog is a way to encourage my Christian brothers and sisters, especially my colleagues in ministry, to participate in self-care by making health and fitness a priority. We must also support and pray for each other as we journey on the road of healthy living. Just as Christianity requires a lifetime commitment, good health and fitness must also be a lifetime commitment. In addition to sharing my journey, I will post articles and information that will help each of us live the healthiest life that we can. This blog will not only focus on physical fitness, but on emotional, spiritual and psychological fitness, as well. Furthermore, I will share information about products and services that will be a blessing to the readers of the My Faith and Fitness blog. My media kit details the services that may be featured.
