Sarah Jakes Lost and Found

Book Review ~ "Lost & Found: Finding HOPE in the Detours of Life" by Sarah Jakes

Disclosure:  Recently, I had the opportunity to read Lost & Found:  Finding HOPE in the Detours of Life by Sarah Jakes so that I could write this book review.  I received the book for free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for writing this book review.  This book review represents my honest opinions, findings, beliefs and experiences with Lost & Found. The views and opinions expressed in this review are purely mine.

Sarah Jakes Lost and FoundReading is one of my favorite activities.  Biographies, especially autobiographies, are my favorite types of books to read.  So, I was excited for the opportunity to read Lost & Found.  I do not follow the personal lives of famous people.  So, I had no idea that Sarah Jakes had become pregnant at the age of thirteen and gave birth when she was fourteen.  Nor did I know that she entered into a troubled marriage and was divorced before she reached the age of twenty-five.  Sarah Jakes shares her experiences candidly.  There’s no sugar coating here.

Powerful.  Honest.  Candid.  Vulnerable.  Insightful.  Painful.

When her family learned of her pregnancy:

That night all six of us – my parents, Cora, Jermaine, Jamar, and I – sat in our living room for hours as a family.  They needed answers.  I had questions.  We needed grace.  I poured out all of my insecurities and answered as many questions as I could.  I took in their shock.  We made no plans for what was next.  There was no time for that.  I think we rested from the pressure of having to hold it all together.  Instead, we took  a moment to break down.

Her choices in her romantic relationship:

I made a conscious decision, and hurt another woman in order to pursue a man who could not see my worth, regardless of how much of me I gave him.  I’ve pondered whether or not to fully admit this truth to the world because it would’ve been so easy to just play the victim.  I could say that I was a good girl who did all the right things, gave my all to my dream man, only to end up devastated.  However, I know the truth and recognize my part in what happened.

On being in ministry:

Very few people know the cost of ministry.  Anytime you give away something that’s in you, you lose a piece of you.  We trust that God will restore all that we have poured out for His glory.  We pray that He’s covering us while we share His Word, but it is still a test of faith to leave your own home unguarded while you help others to rebuild.

Sarah’s experiences reveal how the grace of God was her constant companion (on her shoulder), even though she felt alone.  If you have made decisions that caused you to feel lost and beyond the love of God, I highly recommend that you read Sarah’s story.  If you think that God has forgotten you, read Sarah’s story.  Her story will encourage you in your journey towards wholeness.
