On Tuesday, January 14th, I had the fantastic opportunity to get a great cardio workout with Jennifer Turner, the founder of Mad Cool Fitness. And it was FREE! Here’s some background on Mad Cool Fitness:
MAD COOL FITNESS, LLC (“MCF”) is an inclusive, multicultural healthy lifestyle brand that uses holistic wellness content, interactive online technologies, and local fitness studios to activate long-term healthy behavior change in everyday people. Our mission is to help people and communities to achieve happiness through long-term good health. The MCF wellness programs and philosophy are based on how founder and inspiration wellness leader Jennifer Turner was able to change from being an overweight, asthmatic teen and eating disordered adult, to the marathoner, triathlete, and “Fitness Activator” she is today. The MCF brand is positioned as integrative, practical, and social fitness, designed to “activate” the inherent fitness in every person to achieve personal happiness.
I was excited to learn that a Mad Cool Fitness studio will be opening in the Spring of 2014 in downtown Newark, New Jersey near my office. Just a short 10 minute walk from my office will allow me to get a great cardio workout. I’m super excited that I will have the chance to add some aerobic/dance activity to my exercise regimen. I have a membership with Planet Fitness, which does not offer classes. Machines and personal trainers, but no classes.
Jennifer Turner created a very energetic routine that was suitable for all fitness levels. Since I haven’t taken an aerobics class since 199?, I wanted to make sure that I kept it “low impact.” I wore my Polar RC3 GPS Sports Watch and the heart rate monitor so that there wouldn’t be any heart attacks on the floor. (Just kidding. Sort of.) At one point, my heart rate was 167 beats per minute. Needless to say, Jennifer had me going. I was TI-RED at the end of the hour-long session. I felt good, but I needed rest. Also, it was great to see Deacon Charity from my church and Aliah from The Get Fit Diva blog in the house getting their cardio on too!
So, if you work or live in or around the downtown Newark area, I suggest that you drop in the Mad Cool Fitness studio and get your heart rate jumping. Jennifer will offer classes prior to the official opening of the new studio on various days from 6:00-7:00 p.m. for $15.00 per class. Check out the Mad Cool Fitness website for more details. I hope to see you there. Side note, after taking this group class, I want to get some cute exercise gear. I usually wear a T-shirt over my spandex tops. I like reppin’ my alma maters when I’m at the gym. You never know what other alumni you might meet. Tuesday, Brown University, my undergrad college, was on my mind. I didn’t feel out of place because I wasn’t glammed up, but I saw a several cute outfits that “inspired” me to want to look cute. But, I digress.
